The Nursery is part of our Shukran Complex and provides free nursery for the local children. Approximately 140 children are provided with pre-school early years education and a meal each weekday morning. For many this is their main meal, most come to the nursery hungry and with low energy levels. We provide a maize porridge, which is a significant part of the staple diet in Malawi, mixed with soya flour. The soya is a rich source of protein, which is essential as part of a balanced diet, especially for growing children.
Since we started the nursery three years the numbers have trebled and we believe the daily meal has played a significant part.
The nursery aims to prepare the children for primary education and help improve their performance in the hope that they will want to continue to secondary education.
