Gift of Sight: Cataract operations
Malawi has one of the highest rates of preventable blindness, which can lead to extreme poverty and socio-economic problems.
According to WHO, approximately 130,000 of the population in Malawi is blind, with about half of them suffering from cataract, a treatable condition. However, Only 1-7 people requiring cataract surgery receive them due to finance or access to treatment and approx. 10,000 people go blind due to cataract.
For Just £35 through our Gift of Sight programme you can sponsor a Cataract Operation which will restore one’s vision and allow individuals to return to work to sustain their family, perform the daily chores, become independent and more importantly they will once again be able to see their loved ones. This small gift of restoring one’s vision provides a lifeline for the individuals and can make a profound difference not only on the individual but also on their family and community.
We deliver cataract camps in the different districts, including, Machinga, Mangochi, Zomba, Balaka, Chradzulu, Namwera, Balaka, etc. To date we have delivered almost 10,000 operations over the past 4 years.
For just £35 we can sponsor a cataract operation which will not only restore one’s vision but also enable them to perform the basic daily chores, once again be able to see their loved ones.
The Gift of Sight will also enable individuals to lead a normal life and help to support, sustain and care for their families.
